Depositions for a Plaintiff's Attorney

  • 4 Steps

About

**Approved for 1.0 hours of Kansas CLE credit** Taking a deposition is one of the most crucial skills for a plaintiff’s attorney, but we all know that most legal education devolves into unorganized war stories instead of hands-on techniques. This course is different. I focus on practical instruction. Here’s what we’ll cover: Purpose and Goals for Taking a Deposition: I'll talk about why you even want to take a deposition and what your overall strategy should be. How to Prepare to Take a Deposition: You know you need to prepare. I'll show you what to review and how to develop your topics for the deposition. How to Ask Questions During a Deposition: After you watch this section, you'll know how to ask questions -- and more importantly -- why you need to ask them in a certain way. After you watch this section, it will change your practice, and it will change how you read a deposition transcript. Deposition Objections and How to Deal with Them: A big fear for some attorneys can be that the other lawyer will use objections can derail a deposition. I'll explain why you shouldn't be worried and, in some cases, how objections can help you during a deposition. Defending Depositions – Your Preparation: When it comes to your client's deposition, you will need to prepare before you meet with them. I'll explain how to prepare and what you should review. Defending Depositions – Preparing Your Client: Most likely this will be the first time your client has done a deposition, and they will be very nervous. I'll talk about how to prepare your client for the substance of their deposition. And I'll also talk about how to calm your client's anxiety by leaving them with very simple issues to focus on.
